THE PUPPETEER

Video installation & controller for audience, 2009
Black & white, sound

Video, controller & sound: Jan Mech

The installation The Puppeteer consists out of a video loop, a dynamically generated stereo sound track and a sculptural object constructed out of a children’s bike wheel, 3/4 inch pipes and connection, as well as some electronic parts and a computer. The video loop will not run until a spectator starts to move the wheel. It is the same case for the soundtrack. When the wheel starts to turn, the video projection will start to move. Like the crank at an old time film projector the movement of the wheel will not just transmit a “start” or “stop” command to the computer, but will trigger the video playback image by image. Every second spoke carries a magnet.  When a mag net passes by a reed-contact the serial interface will transmit an impulse to the computer  that triggers  the next frame and creates the soundtrack  in real time.
